Retrofit Guide for Industry 4.0: New Benefits with Existing Machines

To remain successful in the future, companies in the mechanical and plant engineering sector must adapt to the age of digitization. Without spending much time and money.
However, Industry 4.0 applications cannot be used every time because the existing machines in the company aren´t networked with each other.

To integrate these machines into the Internet of Things, a digital retrofit must prepare the existing machines for the future. To this end, the VDMA, together with a project advisory board consisting of 20 VDMA members and a scientific partner, created a guide on the topic of “Retrofit für Industrie 4.0: Neuer Nutzen mit vorhandenen Maschinen”. Software Factory was also involved in the project to create the guide. We at Software Factory have already dealt with the topic of retrofitting in the past and digitized a 25-year-old Kirmesautomat with the help of the IoT platform ThingWorx, thus making it fit for the future.

The aim of the guide is to provide users and providers of Industry 4.0 retrofit solutions with a systematic introduction to the topic. With the help of a step-by-step model, which represents the various degrees of Industry 4.0 retrofits, an overview of the possibilities and forms of implementation of a retrofit on an existing machine is to be provided.
