REGULUS - SF research project
In the research project REGULUS developed by the iwb together with the Software Factory, the AMAG components Deutschland GmbH, Heggemann, FAU, Fronius Deutschland GmbH and the Boeing Germany GmbH a process chain consisting of additive and machining manufacturing processes for the resource-efficient production of large-volume aerospace structural components made from titanium alloys. The motivation for this project was the current increase in the use of difficult-to-machine materials in aviation, which poses a particular challenge in the production of large-volume structural components. A machining rate of over 85% had previously resulted in an immense waste of material, which led to high production costs.
With the aim of developing and implementing a process chain for resource-saving production, arc-based additive manufacturing of raw contours should reduce the degree of machining. This should reduce the current material usage by 90%.
The REGULUS project was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). Supervision was provided by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR).
