Digital Product Passport

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) accompanies a product throughout its entire life cycle and ensures that all parties involved — from manufacturers and retailers to users, recyclers, and waste disposal companies — have access to this information at all times and can provide information themselves. Software Factory offers everything from design and implementation to operation of the Digital Product Passport (DPP).

The DPP will become mandatory in the European Union from 2027. There has already been a lot of coverage about it. There is a great deal of uncertainty. Who is affected by this regulation? What does this regulation mean in concrete terms? The Digital Product Passport is a data set that summarizes the components, materials, ingredients, and also information on reparability, spare parts or proper disposal for a product. In the future, it will accompany a product throughout its entire life cycle. It ensures that all parties involved—from manufacturers and retailers to users, recyclers, and waste disposal companies—have access to the necessary information at all times and can provide information themselves.

Why is the DPP important?

Securing market access: Without the DPP, no sales in the EU.
Creating transparency: Materials, energy consumption, and recyclability can be traced at any time.
Leveraging competitive advantages: Data helps optimize processes, expand services, and develop new business models.

The Battery passport is the first concrete example of its application. It will become mandatory for many types of batteries from February 2027, including batteries for electric vehicles, stationary energy storage systems and industrial applications.

The EU Battery Regulation stipulates the introduction of a battery passport for certain types of batteries. This digital product passport serves as a central tool for creating transparency about the origin, composition, performance, carbon footprint, and recyclability of batteries. For manufacturers, importers and users, the battery passport not only opens up the possibility of legally compliant documentation, but also a clear competitive advantage in an increasingly regulated market.

Software Factory already has experience in creating DPPs and offers comprehensive support from conception and implementation to operation of the Digital Product Pass.
